How We Rate Covers

Every piece of postal history is a unique physical survivor of a bygone era.  To establish an objective, trusted, and repeatable standard for collectors and investors, Cover Collect utilizes a sophisticated multi-disciplinary grading system.

Our methodology combines state-of-the-art machine learning visual models, exhaustive historical databases, and real-world market realizations to evaluate every envelope with absolute clinical objectivity.

The Three Diagnostic Pillars

Our analytical engine does not rely on subjective hype or isolated catalog pricing.  Instead, every cover is systematically audited across three core disciplines.

  1. Mathematical Rate & Routing Verification
We reverse-engineer the postal treaties, international tariffs, and domestic weight steps of the specific era.  The system calculates the exact face value of all stamps and printed stationery, validating that the postage perfectly matches the physical path traveled.

  2. Historical Provenance & Contextual Analysis
We scan historical archives, municipal directories, and census records to identify and preserve the legacy of prominent senders, recipients, early stamp dealers, or pioneering businesses.  The system also identifies connections to major historical milestones, wartime events, and Gilded Age expositions.

  3. Market Density & Realized Value Processing
We evaluate the physical population density of surviving examples.  By cross-referencing millions of historical public auction records and active dealer inventories, our system weighs historical scarcity against active contemporary collector demand to project long-term value stability.

Our 5-Tier Scarcity Scale

Following our forensic audits, each cover is assigned a precise classification and a numerical scarcity rating from 1 to 10.
